Does Google go the way of Yahoo in terms of retargeting?

My MHR post has our head focused on retargeting today.

Retargeting, for those that don’t know, is the practice of identifying a user on your site who has not converted, cookie-ing that user, and then repurchasing them through a publisher or network.

What Yahoo is in the midst of doing right now is pushing folks free search clicks to optimize their campaigns through display. I think Yahoo started this initiative in Q3 of 2007 (I may be mistaken here).

This would seem a logical next step or even first step with the EU Doubleclick probe complete for–as Google calls themselves–a company who is “laser-focused on customer ROI.”
